Tales from the Two Moors Way: Solo Hiking through Dartmoor to Exmoor

Embarking on a solo hiking adventure along the Two Moors Way, I anticipated challenges, but nothing could have prepared me for the rollercoaster of weather and emotions that awaited. As I set foot on the rugged terrain of Dartmoor, heavy rain greeted me with relentless determination, soaking through my supposedly waterproof boots from day one. Despite the unforgiving blisters forming on my feet, I was determined to press on, driven by a sense of adventure and the promise of breathtaking scenery ahead.

The initial days through Dartmoor were a test of endurance, both physically and mentally. With each step, the pain in my feet intensified, yet the solitude and peace offered by the rolling hills provided a sense of solace amidst the stormy weather. As I trudged through the moorland, most shops and pubs stood closed, a stark reminder of the harvest season and the need for self-reliance.

Foraging berries and drinking from a stream with my LifeStraw became a necessity as resources dwindled, but these moments of simplicity only added to the authenticity of the experience. Despite the challenges, there was a raw beauty in embracing the elements and relying on my own instincts to survive.

As I crossed into Exmoor, the weather took a dramatic turn, with a heatwave greeting me as I navigated through the rugged terrain. The contrast was stark, yet the joy of solitude remained a constant companion, guiding me through the changing landscapes.

Finally, as I reached the summit of the final hill before descending into Lynmouth, a breathtaking sight awaited me—the vast expanse of the sea stretching out before me. It was a moment of triumph and exhilaration, knowing that I had conquered the elements and emerged stronger for it.

Arriving at “The Walker” statue on the seafront, the official finishing point of the Two Moors Way, I felt a surge of accomplishment wash over me. Stepping into the pavilion to sign the official book, I was greeted with a well-deserved slice of cake and a steaming cup of coffee—a fitting end to an unforgettable journey.

As I reflected on my solo hiking adventure through Dartmoor and Exmoor, I realized that the true beauty of the Two Moors Way lies not only in the breathtaking landscapes but also in the resilience and determination it inspires within those who dare to traverse its path.
